Welcome to the July edition of Zoo Atlanta 411 Have you visited Zoo Atlanta recently? There is always something new to see and do so I encourage you to add Zoo Atlanta to your Summer fun list! During our most recent visit we caught two of the fabulous shows and played in the Splash Fountains which opened in the Summer of 2013!
Art Gone Wild:
Last month we had the opportunity to attend a day during the Art Gone Wild Paint Out Week as well as the Art Gone Wild Auction. Not only is my daughter a lover of all animals, but she is also an aspiring artist. During the Paint Out Week we had the opportunity to watch about 15-20 artists create art en plein air. Both children had a blast watching and admiring each of the hard working artists. Some of our favorites were the warthog sculpture, tiger paintings and gorilla painting.
A couple weeks later Gwyn and I attended the Art Gone Wild Art Show and Silent Auction to see all of the beautiful completed creations. We got to mix and mingle with the artists and bid on their zoo-inspired pieces. Entertainment, delicious appetizers and tasty beverages were also included in this special evening event. Both of us were in complete awe of the beautiful, unique pieces. Just every art medium and canvas was utilized. There was even origami! Gwyn had a blast talking with the artists one on one about their works of art. Each of the artists generously donated 50% of their proceeds to Zoo Atlanta. Click here for more information about the art show and silent auction. This is one event that I hope Zoo Atlanta continues to offer year after year. My daughter was so inspired that she hopes to participate someday!

Sadly on June 20th Okra Mae delivered an infant which did not survive. Read the full story here.
Something spectacular is in the works at Zoo Atlanta. It is set to be done late 2015 and we are all a little excited. The Scaly Slimy Spectacular: The Amphibian and Reptile Experience will be a 14,000 square foot experience. It will represent the largest fundraising effort in the Zoo’s history. Scaly Slimy Spectacular will replace the 51-year-old World of Reptiles,
the Zoo’s oldest building still in use for public exhibits. Read more about the new exhibit here.
Did you know?
Zoo Atlanta has a fun zoo clues mystery each month that children can participate in. Families can navigate the Zoo helping Detective
Clue Spotter the Otter track down hints to his latest investigation.
Geared towards 8 to 12-year-olds, these fun monthly mysteries are sure
to encourage days of outdoor family fun. When you visit headquarters be sure to grab a detective card in the mailbox that you can stamp each time you solve a mystery. Solve 3 mysteries and earn a special surprise. You can read more about how to participate and download a clue sheet here. The children had a blast with the June mystery and solved the case pretty quickly. Since the month is over I will tell you who they believe the culprit or in this case culprits were.....4 mischievous lion cubs!!!

Thank you very much for sharing! This will save me a lot of time when I go hunting for vdeos :)
Thank you added your link to my unit study page under multi media. http://freehomeschoollessons.weebly.com/world-war-ii-resources.html
SWEET!! I've been interested in WWII for about 4 years now (I'm currently 15) and I highly commend you for letting your kids study this great time period. I've heard of only about half of the films mentioned, so I will definitely be checking a lot of these out!
Couple things:
1. The History Channel just aired a 3 part miniseries called the World Wars, a well-researched re-enactment of WWI and WWII. It is on the History Channel's website - HIGHLY recommend. (If your kids have seen The Book Thief, it's probably OK for them)
2. PBS documentary "Secrets of the Dead" (on their website) - episode "Escape From Auschwitz" - about two men who successfully escaped Auschwitz and told the world about it.
3. WWII True stories coming out this year: Run Boy Run (about a 10 year old Jewish boy who loses his arm while hiding in the forrest from the Nazis), Return to the Hiding Place (Hiding Place sequel)...

thanks for letting me babble. Love this time period.
Thank you!
