A moms review:
For the past few weeks we have been having tons of fun cooking together as a family using the Not Just Tacos cookbook. But it's more than a cookbook filled with recipes...it's an educational experience as well. Yes you read that right it is an educational experience for the entire family. This is a cookbook that will get your family back together in the kitchen. We have been traveling around Latin America without leaving our kitchen (no passport needed, yay). We have learned about cultures, languages, geography and more through this cookbook. We have been cooking together and experiencing amazing food and flavors together that we may have never experienced otherwise. I must admit I would actually prefer hopping on a plane and traveling to Mexico, Puerto Rico and Cuba to experience the culture and food first hand but since that won't be happening anytime soon exploring through this cookbook is the the next best thing.

I was very skeptical about signing up for a cookbook review because well up until about a month ago I never really cooked from scratch, well except to scratch open a box, lol. But about a month ago our family decided to start eating healthier and we started following the primal diet. I decided I needed some more inspiration for cooking healthy, from scratch meals and loved the idea of incorporating some homeschool learning into meal preparation as well.

When the book arrived I couldn't wait to open the package. As I paged through the 229 pgae hardback, beautifully illustrated cookbook I became very excited (yeah me excited about a cookbook NEVER happens, just ask my husband). I even took it over to a friends that same day to show her how amazing it was. Her first reaction was, "it's like a cookbook and a textbook in one." On the way home from my friends house my kids grabbed the cookbook and started placing slips of paper in the book as page holders for recipes they wanted to try. A few days later we tried one and it was amazing.

We live in Atlanta, Georgia which has a very high Hispanic population. My sister in law is half Puerto Rican, my husband is always telling us stories of his time in Honduras and two of my childrens best friends are half Cuban, so instilling knowledge about the Latin American culture is very important to our family. We want them to be able to embrace the Latin American culture and extinguish any stereotypes they may hear about the Latin Americans. This book has been a fabulous resource for just that.

The cookbook has a fabulous glossary making it very easy to find each recipe. After the acknowledgements and forward there is some brief information explaining the Latin America geography, people and spices. There is also a handy conversion chart for weights and measurements (see even homeschool math is covered). The book is broken into 22 countries. Each section starts out with some information about the country and its capitol. There is always a beautiful photograph from the country as well. Next there are several delicious recipes that originate from the country along with more fabulous photos and more information about the countries culture. The recipes are so easy to follow and most of them average 20-60 minutes to make (including prep time). As a visual, somewhat newbie mom chef, I really appreciated all the photos of the dishes. It really helped me with the cooking process.

Here are some of the countries you will explore in Not Just Tacos:
-Cuba
-Costa Rica
-Panama
-Brazil
-Peru
-Uruguay
-Argentina
-Bolivia
-Chile
-and more...

As I noted we started the primal diet. I was quite amazed by how many of the recipes in the book are primal and gluten free friendly. The ones that weren't I was easily able to adjust. For example the first recipe we made was Asado Negro one of the ingredients was brown sugar. I simply used beet syrup in place of the brown sugar and it turned out perfectly.

Whenever we make a meal from the Not Just Tacos cookbook we are sure to take time after dinner to read more about the country in the cookbook and admire all the beautiful photos as well. Many times the children are excited to learn more so we ended up watching some YouTube videos and looking up additional resources online. You can find some of the resources we are currently using here on my Exploring Latin America Pinterest Board. I also found National Geographic Kids to be very helpful (you cannot pin from their website).

Now every time we sit down to eat dinner my kids ask, "so mom what country is this kind of food from." Thank you Shirley for introducing a new way to learn to our family! This cookbook has become our family's favorite cookbook and is proudly displayed on our counter instead of up in the cupboard.
